Dave,

[    0.791660] pci 0000:02:0c.0: PME# supported from D0 D3hot D3cold
[    0.791667] pci 0000:02:0c.0: PME# disabled
There is some resource conflict causing the bootup diagnostics to
disable bus 0000:02:0c.0. Consequently the hcflinmodem drivers are not
even loaded.

Reboot under 2.6.27-7- generic, and run scanModem thereunder to see
the devices it shares its IRQ with. One/some of them are likely the
problem under the current kernel

Try detaching all external devices, and retest.

If still necessary look at the
$ lsmod
list and choose drivers which you can blacklist. You can write a file
$ sudo gedit  /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.daves
with  lines like:

blacklist bluetooth
# preventling loading of blue tooth and modules depending on it.
