You can do requried edits with:$ sudo gedit  /etc/ppp/options

Just wanted to update you on my progress.  I am finally writing fromwithin Linux!!!  I have successfully connected via the softmodem.  Ienabled passive mode in /etc/ppp/options and earlier today had changedlcp-echo interval and lcp-echo-failure to 0, which also got the notebookto connect via USB modem.
