MarvS,

Thank you very much for your instructions and separate message with the package. I ran the find commands both before and after installing that package, and obtained the same results:

~$ find /lib/modules -name agr*.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/extra/agrserial.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/extra/agrmodem.ko
~$ find /lib/modules -name snd-hda-intel.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/ubuntu/sound/alsa-driver/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko

I installed the *.deb package after deleting all drivers I had previously downloaded and installed (I figured out how to do it).

I ran the $ sudo agrsm-test. Here's what it showed:

Found drivers for boot kernel 2.6.24-19-generic at:
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/extra/agrserial.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/extra/agrmodem.ko

Loading drivers:

Drivers loaded:
agrserial 15456 0
agrmodem 1253636 1
snd_hda_intel 295456 1 agrmodem
snd 56996 20 agrmodem,snd_hda_intel,snd_hwdep,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device

and symbolic link created:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2009-01-03 16:19 /dev/ttySAGR -> /dev/ttyAGS3

Checking for utility wvdialconf
Found /usr/bin/wvdialconf, preparing to run:
	wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.
Modem Port Scan<*1>: S1 S2 S3
ttySAGR<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttySAGR<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttySAGR<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.

A reboot may be necessary before modem detection through:
	sudo modprobe agrserial
Which will load agrmodem, agrserial and create the symbolic link needed for:
	sudo wvdialconf

The installation record has been written to ./agrsm-test.txt

I read the instructions in usages.txt and tried the first two options to fix the problem -- editing /boot/grub/menu.lst and then disabling system audio in the bootup BIOS. After each of these attempts, I got an error message: "Error 15: file not found" that offered me a choice of OS to boot into. Each time I selected the "without acpi" option. Then it would return me to the black screen with instruction to "Press any key to continue". I waited many minutes each time but the system never seemed to boot, so I had to use the recovery mode option to boot successfully and then turn off the machine.

Are there any possibilities left? I guess there is moving the modem card to another PCI slot, but I have very little experience actually moving/installing components inside a computer box, so I'd be a little nervous about doing that.

I'm deeply grateful for your and Antonio's help.

Thanks again,

Devon
