Thinkpad T40 Modem and OpenSUSE 11.0 - Won't Connect

Hiya,

This problem has been driving me nuts for weeks and it's only due to a
bout of nasty lurgy that I have tried to do something constructive by
solving this problem I have with my ThinkPad's modem. Sadly I have got
nowhere.

I'm not sure where to start but basically, it won't connect. I start
things off by executing:

# slmodemd --country=UK --alsa

Which comes back with:

SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Aug  3 2008 22:31:06
symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/1' created.
modem `modem:1' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/1'
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.

So to confirm that things are happening I run:

# wvdialconf

Which comes back with:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.

ttySL0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 -- OK

Found a modem on /dev/ttySL0.
Modem configuration written to /etc/wvdial.conf.
ttySL0<Info>: Speed 460800; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"
------------------------------------------------------------------------

My wvdial.conf looks like:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem = /dev/ttySL0
Phone = 08451400101
Idle Seconds = 300
Password = ***********
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Stupid Mode = 1
Compuserve = 0
Baud = 460800
Auto DNS = 1
Dial Command = ATDT
Ask Password = 0
ISDN = 0
Username = ***********
Carrier Check = no
; Password = <Your Password>
; Username = <Your Login Name>
---------------------------------------------------------

(I have removed my username and password)

And then I run:

# wvdial

And this results in:

------------------------------------------------------------------
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Idle Seconds = 300, disabling automatic reconnect.
--> Sending: ATDT08451400101
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT08451400101
------------------------------------------------------------------

After this, all that happens is it sits there for a while before
giving up and repeatedly outputting:

--> Sending: ATDT08451400101
--> Waiting for carrier.
--> Timed out while dialing. Trying again.

Until I hit Ctrl+C

Does anybody have any ideas of what I am doing wrong? I would add
NetworkManager is running and I'm running OpenSUSE 11.0 with Gnome.

KInternet does nothing to help.

The output of scanModem alluded to needing the SmartLink Soft Modem
and --alsa option on the slmodem daemon.

Thanks a million for any help you may be able to provide. I have
googled this so much and drawn blanks.
