Before working with fax, you must confirm that the modem is responding
to the Pctel drivers.

0) the sl-modem-daemon package is NOT appropriate to your System.
uninstall with:
$ sudo apt-get remove sl-modem-daemon

1)  Have you installed the pctel drivers?
If not that is the next step.

2) if the install was successful, the first test for modem function is:
$ sudo wvdialconf   /etc/wvdial.conf

Only it the modem is thus found, is it worth while testing fax.
