compiling is necessary packages must be installed, providing:
       gcc-4.3 make kernel-source-2.6.25.5-1.1-pae

Then from near the bottom of
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php   get the
	hsfmodem-7.68.00.14full-1.i386.rpm.zip
Unzip ONLY under Linux:
$ unzip hsf*.zip

Use  Konqueror  to  browse over/OpenFile
hsfmodem-7.68.00.14full-1.i386.rpm , to start the install.

A reboot may be necessary before the modem is properly detected.
$ su root
# wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
should detect the modem.

Most expert support for the Conexant modems is from , "Support
(Jonathan)" <support@xxxxxxxxxxxx>,

Start at  http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full for
 eventually download of a hsfmodem-7.68.00.07full_k.???.zip package
 with ??? the package type (deb, rpm, tar etc)
 These packages have compiled drivers but will also compile a driver,
 if there is a mismatch between the resident kernel and provided driver.
 The generic hsfmodem-7.68.00.07full.tar.gz package only provides
compiling support
