thanks for your reply . KPPP just keeps redialing and just keeps giving me the NO CARRIER message.

wvdial does not see the modem . :

[ WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory ]

here's what the terminal returns after i enter  '$ sudo slmodemd -c USA --alsa hw:0,6' :

symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/1' created.
modem `hw:0,6' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/1'
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination. ]

KPPP is the only dialer that has ttySL0 as a device selection.
