Martian Modem not working with IBM Thinkpad T21 and Ubuntu 8.10

I previously had Ubuntu 8.4LTS on this laptop. ScanModem detected I needed the Martian package for my WinModem. The only version I could get to work with Ubuntu and this laptop was the martian-full-20080407.tar.gz package. Now with Ubuntu 8.10 the only package that compiles on my system is martian-full-20080625.tar.gz. I think it might be a newer gcc package? Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work because Gnome-PPP/WVdial cannot initialize the modem. The device is created, the module is loaded, but I tried running the program with debug=5 option in the command line and use it with Gnome-PPP it seems to go into an infinite loop until I break out of it:
