Hi all,
I'm trying to get a usb modem identifying itself as "SGS Thomson
Microelectronics 56k SoftModem" (vendor 0x0483, device 0x7554) to work
on Gentoo, kernel version is 2.6.25-gentoo-r6.
From the scanModem utility (find ModemData.txt attached below) I
learned I need the slusb driver, so I downloaded slmodem-2.9.11-10080817
and, after hacking the driver to work around the license issues with
recent kernels, I got the module to compile and load all right, however
if I try to dial out with wvdial, I always get a "NO CARRIER" error (see
transcript of a test session below).
Is this modem still supported? How can I get it to work?

packages, for kernels 2.6.24 and later versions.

or comparable Repository for other Linux distros.
When compiling ALSA drivers, the utility "patch" will also be needed.
If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some
FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then
