Nitin,

You should be using the newest  slmodem-2.9.11-20080811.tar.gz
Earlier versions will quit, when they try to co-compile lsusb.ko
which is forbidden by Linux for Licensing reasons after 2.4.26 kernels.

Be sure to do a:
# make clean
before each
# make
