Also, in firefox, you need to un-check 'work offline' which is often selected when interface eth0 is or wlan0 is brought down.

Dear Bjorn,

what are "kernel sources"? Synaptic reveals only two ubuntu versions:
"oprofile" and "xserver-xorg-input-wacom". But nevertheless yesterday I made
a full update with all available updates. Therefore I would not expect
different versions (what a kernel-source is).

Then I did marigold7@Lenovo:~$ sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.21.0-22
to get rid of the old kernel (saved 50 MB space) and I restarted the
computer.

Next I thought about compiling the driver in agrsm-HDA-20080721.tar.bz2.
Searching for the files with agrmodem I found "agrmodem.ko" in the folder
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/extra (probably it is from my installation of
agrsm-ubuntu8.04.1-2.6.24-19-generic.tar.gz as suggested by Marvin).
Therefore I stopped here and I tryed the modem function:

I realy do not understand what is going on here. To my knowledge my line
uses tones (here is also no connection via firefox).

Do you understand the outputs? It seems that the modem should function, but
I do not hear a tone (in GNOME PPP I selected the configuration for the tone
"loud", but a can not hear the modem noise I know from my winmodem using
windows XP on my older laptop). The sound of other devices (video, audio
etc.) is well.

With best wishes,

Robert

To test a modem with the 11c11040 chip, reboot to enable loading of the new snd-hda-intel driver. Likely it will not be possible to unload your running
driver.
Follow instructions of agrsm_howto.txt, starting at 1)

For other modem chips, rebooting may not be necessary. Do:
$ sudo modprobe agrmodem
$ sudo modprobe agrserial
and dynamic creation of the modem port should be created.
Read the agrsm_howto.txt for follow through details.

Hi Robert, Do you have your kernel sources installed? (check
synaptics for a package called kernel-source, and
verify the version is the same as your current running
kernel.)

At this point, you will need to start by compiling the
driver in agrsm-HDA-20080721.tar.bz2 in the 11c11040
pit of the linmodems site.
The instructions on how to build are in the HOWTO also
at that location. (ignore the stuff about patching
ALSA for now).
If you can get them successfully built, then we can
continue and address the alsa issue. If those drivers
do not build, you will need to use the ALSA15 version
of the package, but we'll climb that wall when we get
to it.
Bjorn.

Dear Bjorn,

b) 2.6.24-16-generic (I installed Ubuntu 8.04 using

c) 2.6.24-19-generic (yesterday I made a system

Together with the kernel 2.6.24-16-generic I
installed alsa driver 1.0.15.

Hi Robert, Looks like we're going to be building the modules
from
scratch here...
So, let me check if I've got everything straight:
1. Your kernel version is 2.6.24-19?
What version of the ALSA modules do you have loaded?
(command is 'cat /proc/asound/version')? This is
critical to know. We DO have drivers for both ALSA
1.0.15 and 1.0.16 and newer, but which you can use
depends on the version of ALSA your kernel shipped
with. (As such, have you installed a new version of
alsa-driver since then?)

Looking forward to your reply, Bjorn.

ALSA
