RE: SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.9e-pre1
This old version is likely your only problem.

 Download from
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.3.tar.gz having a compiled
slmodemd. Unpack under Linux with:
      $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.3.tar.gz

Ok! It works out of the box with this version! I will do a bug report for the debian package.

Thx again,
Best regards
Guillaume

cd SLMODEMD.gcc4.3
$ sudo  mv /usr/sbin/slmodemd   /usr/sbin/slmodemd.old
$ sudo cp slmodemd    /usr/sbin/slmodemd
$ sudo chmod + x   /usr/sbin/slmodemd
$ slmodemd  --version
should report 2.9.11

Then setup the modem and try to dialout again.
