Please try to do the following

Open a terminal and type
1) sudo ifconfig eth0 down
2) sudo wvdial

Open up another terminal/tab and type
$ sudo tail -f /var/log/messages

paste output and send it to list. Then use CTRL+C combination to quit the tail -f /var/log/messages command.

You should see something like:
except this is under Fedora

[root@localhost ~]# tail -f /var/log/messages
Aug 1 14:09:58 localhost martian: info: session: Started Fri Aug 1 14:09:58 2008
Aug  1 14:10:35 localhost pppd[25581]: pppd 2.4.4 started by root, uid 0
Aug  1 14:10:35 localhost pppd[25581]: Using interface ppp0
Aug  1 14:10:35 localhost pppd[25581]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
Aug 1 14:10:35 localhost pppd[25581]: PAP authentication succeeded
Aug 1 14:10:36 localhost pppd[25581]: Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP
Aug  1 14:10:36 localhost pppd[25581]: local  IP address 66.201.8.112
Aug  1 14:10:36 localhost pppd[25581]: remote IP address 66.201.8.6
Aug  1 14:10:36 localhost pppd[25581]: primary   DNS address 66.201.0.203
Aug  1 14:10:36 localhost pppd[25581]: secondary DNS address 66.94.120.9

So you have NetworkManager running?
It might be getting in the way. While trying to browse, NetworkManager might try to assign DNS of its own? I do not know how it works in Ubuntu :(
Send the output from the commands on top to list.

Thanks,

Antonio
