Willow,

Within scanModem, the ALSA version is read from
$ aplay --version
and aplay is provided in the alsa-utils package, which you didn't update.
This while your drivers are now ALSA version 1.0.16, scanModem is
still reporting 1.0.15

The procedure for applying the patch is as follows.
In a folder which shows at least:
$ ls
alsa-driver-1.0.15  alsa-lib-1.0.15  hda_symbols.patch

The patch command is:
$ patch -p0 < hda_symbols.patch

But there has been some problem in the transmission of the patch because:

$ patch -p0 < hda_symbols.patch
patching file alsa-driver-1.0.15/alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_codec.c
patching file alsa-driver-1.0.15/sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c
Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected!  Assume -R? [n]

That is there is some problem with the 2nd component of the patch.
I've asked Jose Luis to double check.  Best wait until this is clarified.

But after the patch is properly done,
Once more again run the compile and installation of the ALSA drivers.

Then follow the  agrsm_howto.txt  with respect to testing.
