Stuart,

The object of this step is to specify functions which should NOT be
activated on bootup,
as they may compete for needed modem resources. Once the modem is
functional, you can try adding them back one by one.

Create a file with:
$ sudo gedit  /etc/modprobe.d/kay
with lines below. You don't have to include the lines beginning with #

# are comment lines and not read by the System ,
blacklist shpchp
# PCI hotplug devices support
# blackisted modules will not be loaded upon bootup, usually. To check
# lsmod | grep shpchp

blacklist e1000
# for your Intel ethernet e1000, to check
# lsmod | grep e1000
# could be loaded later with
# sudo modprobe e1000

blacklist ath_hal
# Atheros wireless driver
blacklist pcmcia
# pcmcia functions
blacklist parport_pc
blacklist ppdev
# parallel printer port stuff
backlist l2cap
blacklist rfcomm
# bluetooth support
blacklist usbcore
# usb port support, physically remove non essential functions too
## END

Save the file and reboot, it will then be read.
Rerun scanModem and check for modem detection by ALSA diagnostics.
