Lexx,

Try to get the serial modem working first so you can get online under Linux.
Drivers for the serial modem are likely compiled into your kernel.
Test with
$  su -  root
# wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
IF the modem is found, edit in your dialout info with:
# gedit   /etc/wvdial.conf
to a final format like that below.
Then you should be able to dialout with
# wvdial
Write back at this point if you have problems.

Once you are line,
#  apt-get update
#  apt-get upgrade
Then get needed packages for compiling:
# apt-get install gcc-4.1  linux-headers-2.6.18-5-686 kernel-kbuild-2.6-18

Then from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/sv92/
get the agrsm-20080203.tar.gz . Unpack with:
$ tar zxf  agrsm*.tar.gz
There is good guidance in the package,

Needed to prepare drivers for:
 Class 0780: 11c1:048c Communication controller: Agere Systems V.92 56K WinModem
   Primary PCI_id  11c1:048c
Support type needed or chipset: Agere.SV2P
