Emanuele,
We are delighted that your System is on line under Linux. We will be even MORE delighted, if we can progressively deduce whatthe limiting problems were/are, because likely they will recur in thefuture. The most that can be said is that your capacity to CONNECT under Linuxis erratic, and we still have to deduce why. Jacques is more knowledgeable tham I on the subtles of thesenetworking issues, and may have better suggestions on how to movetowards a better understanding. Here is a beginning:
1. why doesn't work the X3 command in the position that you suggested(and why that "NO DIALTONE" message)?----------With respect to X3 position, I'm not sure. Typically among the Init2string components, the modifiers with a +Somethingare placed towards the end of the string
2. why are there all that "NO CARRIER" errors before the modem startsto work? Under Ms Windows the modem catches the carrier *always* atthe first attempt...--------My modem uses the slmodemd and ALSA driver snd-via82xx-modem(complementing the hardware). There will frequently be an initial "NOCARRIER", but the CONNECT is successful anyway.Without theCarrier Check = noin the wvdial.conf, there is an initial CONNECT but later failure inlogin negotiations.Figuring this out requires someone more familiar with the COMM code than I.
3. why does wvdial say "CONNECT 33600" when under Ms Windows the modemconnects at 52000 or 50600, but never at 33600? How can I increase theconnection speed?------------If we can deduce the limiting erratic feature under Linux, likely youspeed can be increased. For a start, try to +MS=90 , rather than +MS+34
4. How can I close the session? I made a Ctrl+C to stop wvdial in theconsole and even if it says "exit gracefully" this method seems to mevery raw.------------------------------ gnome-ppp is a graphical front end to wvdial which looks moreelegant, using its own config file .wvdial.conf in your User folder. We recommend against it usage in cases like yours, as it blocks somediagnositic messages.
Failure of a 2nd dialout attempt fails an initial success doessometime occur. Unloading and reloading the driver can help. For yourSystem, do this through reuse of the bootup scripts with:$ sudo /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon restart
Do read Jacque's Post Install HowTo at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il.With this, let's invite comments from others,
