RE: needs the SmartLink driver
slmodemd is NOT a driver.  Rather it acts through one of several
hardware specific drivers (snd-hda-intel, snd-via82xx-modem,
snd-atiixp-modem, snd-intel8x0m, slamr or slusb) which provide low
level contact with the hardware.  The higher level COMM functionality
was partitioned into slmodemd by maintainer Sasha Khapyorsky.
slmodemd remains effective across multiple kernels, and only the low
level drivers have to be updated with kernel changes.

RE: the fact that there is an intel sound driver kinda puzzles me,
High Definition Audio (HDA) support under Linux was first coded for an
Intel HDA audio card. Hence the driver name given: snd-hda-intel.
Subsequently support for many other Vendor's HDA cards was blended in,
while retaining the driver name snd-hda-intel.

HDA cards can host softmodem chips in their Subsystems, and the low
level modem support was also added to snd-hha-intel. Again the high
level COMM  support is provided by slmodemd.
