Okay, in any of you remember, I posted here on tuesday. Anyway, I was
able to load Ubuntu 7.10 LiveCD and test all my modems with the latest
ScanModem script. Here is what came up for all of my modems. Which modem
would you like me to try first, the Smartlink or the Lucent/Agere? Also
I have an intel modem I was able to get to work, but it goes into some
strange expansion slot I fail to recognize (the slot is brown, about
half the size of PCI and NOT on my main computer, which I want to run
linux on). All of my other modems are PCI. I dont know of it matters,
but I have a wierd soundcard configuration. I have an integrated HD
soundcard and a soundBlaster Live!Value in a PCI slot (i use it for my
digital-only speakers).

However some compilations and executable functions may need additional
files,
in the FileNames.h (so called kernel "h"eaders) collection installed
in /usr/include/ .
For martian_modem, additional required packages are libc6-dev (and for
Debian/Ubuntu, linux-libc-dev). The also required headers of package
libc6 are commonly installed by default.
If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some
FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then
Some additional kernel-header files need installation to /usr/include.
The minimal additional packages are libc6-dev
and any of its dependents, under Ubuntu linux-libc-dev
If an alternate ethernet connection is available,
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel
will install needed package
For Debian/Ubuntu related distributions, run the following command to
display the needed package list:
Otherwise packages have to be found through http://packages.ubuntu.com
Once downloaded and transferred into a Linux partition,
they can be installed alltogether with:

Also, if there is any good reason why I souldn't use OpenSuse 10.3,
throw the DVD in the garbage, and download Fedora instead, please tell
me now. The reason I dont just use ubuntu is that since I have dial-up
at home (but my school has 5MByte per second fiber), I cant download
much and dont want to waste time treading through the dependancy-swamp.

PS. i also have a conexant modem which works with the Linixant drivers,
but the modem was free and I do not indent to pay $20 for the drivers.
If worst comes to worst, I'll use that $20 to start a "DSL savings fund"
for myself.
