Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack under
Linux with:
 $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
 and read instructions therein.

Do:
$ slmodemd -version
which will report 2.9.9e
which is too old.

$ sudo mv /usr/sbin/slmodemd   /usr/sbin/slmodemd_2.9.9.e

 Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
 the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd of version 2.9.11

$ sudo /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon  stop
$ sudo gedit /etc/default//etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon
Change the COUNTY from USA to ITALY

$ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
Within the SLMODEMD.gcc4.1  folder
$ sudo cp slmodemd   /usr/sbin/slmodemd
$ sudo  chmod +x  /usr/sbin/slmodemd
Check the version
$ slmodemd  --version
should report 2.9.11

$ sudo /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon  start
will do
   slmodemd -c  ITALY --alsa modem:1
 reporting dynamic creation of ports:
 /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
THis will happen automatically on bootup too.

$ sudo wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
should find the
Read the wvdial.txt sample in the SLMODEMD.gcc4.1 folder. Put in
your personal info with:
$ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
Don't run wvdialconf again or it will overwrite your edited /etc/wvdial.conf

Afterward you should be able to dialout with:
$ sudo wvdial
