John,
In http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/post-install.html I explained how to
obtain a log of a debug session which briefly goes as follows:
-add to /etc/ppp/options a line
debug
-open an additional terminal.
-just before starting wvdial, start in the additional terminal:
sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog | tee debugging.log
(a word of caution here: your Ubuntu has the info on syslog, not on
messages)
-now start wvdial as usual, wait for its death, and finally
-stop the tail command with CTRL-C
Do you see any string LCP on the tail window near the failure?
Please send us the file debugging.log
All that was to explain how to grab that small part of the huge file
syslog, contributed to syslog while testing wvdial. There are zillions
of other ways to do it, some simpler for a trained user, and I do not
know you...
It may point at a general problem with slmodemd and kernel 2.6.22-14
I am sweating with that for nearly a month now with somebody who has a
problem which MAY BE the same as yours.
Unfortunately my machine has a Conexant modem and the user whom I try to
help lives 3,000 km from me, with no phone access where he has a LAN
access so I have no way to work "hands on".
Do you know or do you need help to positively verify that the file
/usr/bin/slmodemd which you use is the one supplied by SLMODEMDetc.. and
NOT the one plugged there by Ubuntu's slmodem-daemon mechanism?

Need help
The wvdial.conf file appears to contain the correct values.
The problem is that it connects on occasion. The changes are better
late at night. I know the line works well because my other laptop
running windows, connects immediately and stays connected any time of
day.
I went through the Linmodem "Post Install Problems" page offered by
Jacques G., including the trouble shooting section, trying all the
possibilities, but no success.
I don't know what else to do to test or debug.
Farther down is a line containing <<<< Succeeded >>>>>.
Below it is the session script. It happened to succeed.
Anyway.... the usual routine is as follows....
Starting with slmodemd in one terminal:
smaknj@Smaknj-Laptop:~$ sudo slmodemd -c CANADA --alsa hw:0,6
SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Feb 17 2008 09:31:10
symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/1' created.
modem `hw:0,6' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/1'
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.
Followed in a second terminal with:
smaknj@Smaknj-Laptop:~$ sudo wvdial
