Michael,

Next to ModemData.txt in the subdirectory where you found it, there is another file named Conexant.txt which says what you have to do to get and install the Linuxant driver. There is no alternate to that driver. The free version is limited to 14.4 kbauds. You have to pay them 20$ if you want full use of the modem (56k, FAX).
The job is very simple if you strictly follow the instructions.

In the Linuxant download HSF Web page you will see:
How to detect the modem and install the driver using the installer
That's fine if you are connected to the Internet through an other device (Ethernet, WiFi). This installer needs network access.
