To d@xxxxxx,
Having a vehicle computer (Sunit d12) with a siemens mc35i internal modem that
as far as I understand is not a linmodem. However, to be sure I ran scanModem.
Based on attached ModemData.txt can it then be concluded that mentioned modem
is not a linmodem?
A bit of background: I'm newbie in modems ... with SuSE 10.0 and OpenSuse 10.2
vanillas I get the modem running without doing anything except for setting up
pppd with ISP info and inserting SIM. Most of the time the modem runs without
problems, but once in a while it hangs for a day or even more. Can't even
communicate with it using Kermit. I'm not able to reproduce the modem hanging -
some times that is just state of affairs and now I am trying to hunt down what
is wrong and what to do.
Anybody experiences with mentioned modem or good pointers on what direction to
go. I'm slowly making my way thru the Modem-HOWTO
(http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html) and came across the linmodem business
and wanted to rule that out ...
Thanks MJ

The base of the UDEV device file system is: /dev/.udevdb
Versions adequately match for the compiler installed: 4.0.2
and the compiler used in kernel assembly: 4.0.2
Minimal compiling resources appear complete:
make utility - /usr/bin/make
Compiler version 4.0
linuc_headers base folder /lib/modules/2.6.13-15.15-default/build
However some compilations and executable functions may need additional files,
in the FileNames.h (so called kernel "h"eaders) collection installed in /usr/include/ .
For martian_modem, additional required packages are libc6-dev (and for Debian/Ubuntu, linux-libc-dev). The also required headers of package libc6 are commonly installed by default.
If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then
Some additional kernel-header files need installation to /usr/include. The minimal additional packages are libc6-dev
and any of its dependents, under Ubuntu linux-libc-dev
If an alternate ethernet connection is available,
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel
will install needed package
For Debian/Ubuntu related distributions, run the following command to display the needed package list:
Otherwise packages have to be found through http://packages.ubuntu.com
Once downloaded and transferred into a Linux partition,
they can be installed alltogether with:
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Checking pppd properties:
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root dialout 279704 Sep 9 2005 /usr/sbin/pppd
In case of an "error 17" "serial loopback" problem, see:
http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/archive-sixth/msg02637.html
To enable dialout without Root permission do:
$ su - root (not for Ubuntu)
chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd
or under Ubuntu related Linuxes
chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd
