Compiling is necessary packages must be installed, providing:
       gcc-4.1
 linux-headers-2.6.18-4-686 linux-headers-2.6.18-4
 kernel-kbuild-2.6-18 (or similar)
to support driver compiling.
Also get the sl-modem-daemon package

After downloading them from the Debian repository,
they can be co-installed with:
# dpkg -i *.deb

Then from http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/packages/smartlink/
download the slmodem-2.9.11-20070813.tar.gz
and run the compile and install.

Every time you change the kernel, repeat the driver compile and
installation with the matching linux-headers-NewVersion
