Filippo Is your modem external or internal to the PC? Read SoftModem.txt about running diagnostics under Microsoft. scanModem only detects PCI and not ISA card modems of older PCs. For your Ubuntu Linux version 2.6.22-14-generic with ICH2 audio card, try running $ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf which would detect Controller chipset ISA cards.
