RE: the Smartlink stopped working after a couple of weeks
========
You probably updated your kernel. For every kernel update you must
also get/compile matching ungrab-winmodem and slamr drivers.

   Class 0703: 10b9:5459 Modem: ALi Corporation SmartLink SmartPCI561 56K Modem
      Primary PCI_id  10b9:5459
 Support type needed or chipset:	slamr
---------
is much easier to keep in service than the Intel-537 types.

For 2.6.15-23-686 , there is a package  slamr-2.6.15-23-686.tar.gz at
http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/packages/smartlink/Ubuntu/

But it would be better to upgrade to the current Gutsy release and
install the matching drivers afterward
