Hello!

I've trouble to get the softmodem in our laptops (Toshiba Satellite Pro A120) to work, distribution is Ubuntu 7.10 which seems to have a old slmodemd (did not install it on this laptop)

I already downloaded today's slmodemd from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz and did "sudo slmodemd -c GERMANY --alsa hw:0,6" where Germany is of course the wrong country - but Ethiopia did not seem to be available.

I always get the error "NO CARRIER" when try to dial-up to Ethiopian Telecomunications.

I think, _something_ seems to work: If I replace the internet dial-up number with the number of my cellphone, it rings, I can accept the call but don't here anything but some noise.

 intensive or "softmodem" type. Its primary controller manages the traffic
 with the CPU. But the software needed is specified in the Subsystem.

If an alternate ethernet connection is available,
$  apt-get update
$  apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel
