Charles,
Since you do not have a built-in modem (ModemData.txt would have seen
it), I see only one quick solution which is a matter of luck: look at
http://windows-breaker.devidal.tv:5190/~chris/winmodems/pcmcia_list.html
All modems with a green bar labelled OK on the left will work without
any special driver and will immediately be recognized by wvdialconf or
kppp as /dev/ttyS0 ...> /dev/ttyS3
If you have Windows on the same machine, the correspondence is
COM1 -> ttyS0 etc...
You may perhaps be lucky to find a modem from this green list in your
country/city.
