Rob,
1)  Do not have martian_dev loaded at the same time asltmodem + ltserial  as they would compete for the same hardware.But otherwise there  is nothing wrong with having alternative driverspresent as unloaded modules.
2) Would do no harm to retest using martian_modem againNote that martian_modem is not a driver, requiring matching with aparticular kernel, i.e. a single martian_modem will work with multiplekernel versions
