Jack, Please send to the List not to me directly, for faster service First uninstall the hsfmodem package following its directions. $ sudo hsfconfig --help or similar will report the uninstall command. Its drivers are competing for resources. Than reboot. If sl-modem-daemon properly runs $ ls -l /dev/ttySL0 should report a link /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N , N some number. $ lsmod | grep ungrab and $ lsmod | grep slam should report ungrab-winmodem and slamr drivers loaded indicating that the modem has been setup properly. If OK $ sudo wvdial /etc/wvdial.conf will find the modem. Read the wvdial.txt to guide an edit: $ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf Save and dialout with: $ sudo wvdial MarvS On 10/2/07, Jack Matatula <jrmatatula@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: > Marv, > I still have a problem, as follow: > > Installing the Debian packages supporting autoloading > (Reading database ... 91346 files and directories currently installed.) > Preparing to replace sl-modem-daemon 2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5build1 (using sl-modem-daemon_2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5build1_i386.deb) ... > Shutting down SmartLink Modem driver normally ... no slmodemd daemon running. > Unloading modem driver from kernel ... none found. > Unpacking replacement sl-modem-daemon ... > Setting up sl-modem-daemon (2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5build1) ... > FATAL: Error inserting slamr (/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/extra/slamr.ko): Cannot allocate memory > FATAL: Error inserting slamr (/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/extra/slamr.ko): Cannot allocate memory > Starting SmartLink Modem driver for: slamr0. > Creating /dev/modem symlink, pointing to: /dev/ttySL0. > > > Copying over newer files > cp: cannot stat `sl-modem-daemon.modutils': No such file or directory > Making folder /lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/extra > Copying drivers to /lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/extra > Checking driver install > hsfengine.ko hsfmc97sis.ko hsfsoar.ko snd-hda-intel.ko > hsfhda.ko hsfmc97via.ko hsfusbcd2.ko ungrab-winmodem.ko > hsfmc97ali.ko hsfosspec.ko slamr.ko > hsfmc97ati.ko hsfpcibasic2.ko slusb.ko > hsfmc97ich.ko hsfserial.ko snd-hda-codec.ko > Finished installs. > Informing the System > > Starting function tests, loading drivers: > FATAL: Error inserting slamr (/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/extra/slamr.ko): Cannot allocate memory > Running diagnostic: > > [ 24.620000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 27.028000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 27.032000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 27.032000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 59.980000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 59.984000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 59.984000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 59.988000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 60.048000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 60.052000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 60.052000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 60.052000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 776.752000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 776.756000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 776.760000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 776.760000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 776.868000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 776.872000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 776.872000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 776.876000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 793.536000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 793.544000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 793.548000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 793.548000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 2029.996000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 2030.000000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 2030.000000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 2030.000000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 2030.104000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 2030.108000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 2030.112000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 2030.112000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 2055.920000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 2055.924000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 2055.924000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 2055.924000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 2459.856000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 2459.860000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 2459.860000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 2459.860000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 2459.936000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 2459.940000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 2459.944000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 2459.944000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > [ 2491.068000] slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem. > [ 2491.068000] slamr: probe 10b9:5457 SL1800 card... > [ 2491.072000] slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 > [ 2491.072000] slamr: slamr0 is SL1800 card. > > ports should be created by: > slmodemd -c USA /dev/slamr0 > error: mdm setup: cannot open dev `/dev/slamr0': No such device > error: cannot setup device `/dev/slamr0' > Checking for success > Port creation with slmodemd failed. > Read the Slamr.txt record, other 1st_Read.txt CountryList.txt wvdial.txt files and the sample wvdial.conf. > > Jack > > > ----- Original Message ---- > From: Marvin Stodolsky <marvin.stodolsky@xxxxxxxxx> > To: Jack Matatula <jrmatatula@xxxxxxxxx> > Sent: Tuesday, October 2, 2007 11:45:34 AM > Subject: Re: Model Dial Up > > Jack > > RE: ATI3 - Lucent SoftModem Version 3.1.113 for > > PCI slot PCI ID SubsystemID Name > ---------- --------- --------- -------------- > 00:08.0 10b9:5457 1025:102b Modem: ALi > > unequivocally established that the ungrab-winmodem + slamr drivers > must be used.
