Re: BTW, I know the modem is healthy because I got it to work on Windoze.
Do the modem diagnostics under  Windoze. and return the info,
including the driver name and the AT responses.

Also from wwwl.linuxant.com, download and try the Listmodem tool from
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/modemident.php and see what it reports.
