Re: Scanning PCMCIA card - error -

Dear Ramnarayan K

1-To your internal HSF modem: scanModem has written a file Conexant.txt which says everything about how to make this driver work. Note that the free version is limited 10 14.4 kbauds and does not support FAX. Note also, in that note, that you can pay (I suggest, later, once you have checked that the limited driver works in your computer) to release the speed and FAX limitations. Also note and read a remark about the availability of the unlimited version on the maintenance site for Dell computers. This could possibly make your PCMCIA card unnecessary unless you need cellular phone connectivity.

2-To your PCMCIA card: scanModem is intended for internal PCI modems only.
To make use of PCMCIA cards under Linux, the reference is http://tldp.org/HOWTO/PCMCIA-HOWTO.html This "official" document, not updated since 2003, shows your modem as unsupported.
Rob Clark's updated table at
http://xmodem.org/modems/pcmcia_list.html
shows the same but gives a name and e-mail address for somebody who knows about this modem under Linux.

Hi

Have been trying to see if a PCMCIA fax modem card would work under linux.

Initially the pcmcia card showed up as alloted to /dev/ttyS0 but now for some (unknown to me) reason it no longer shows up as being mounted ! anywhere.

Its a Motorola Montana 33.6 Modem / Fax

*This was when something seemed to work**

The following is the contents of "wvdial conf wvtest"

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
; Phone = <Target Phone Number>
ISDN = 0
; Password = <Your Password>
; Username = <Your Login Name>
Modem = /dev/ttyS0

The current result of hal-device

0: udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pcmcia__1__1'
   pcmcia.card_id = 1285  (0x505)  (int)
   info.bus = 'pcmcia'  (string)
   pcmcia.prod_id1 = 'Motorola'  (string)
   pcmcia.manf_id = 265  (0x109)  (int)
   pcmcia.func_id = 2  (0x2)  (int)
   pcmcia.vendor = 'Motorola'  (string)
   info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pcmcia__1__1'  (string)
   pcmcia.prod_id2 = 'MONTANA 33.6 FAX/MODEM'  (string)
   linux.subsystem = 'pcmcia'  (string)
   pcmcia.prod_id3 = 'V2.0'  (string)
   info.vendor = 'Motorola'  (string)
   info.subsystem = 'pcmcia'  (string)
   info.product = 'MONTANA 33.6 FAX/MODEM'  (string)
   linux.hotplug_type = 2  (0x2)  (int)
   linux.sysfs_path =
'/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:15:00.0/0.0'  (string)
   pcmcia.product = 'Motorola'  (string)
   pcmcia.socket_number = 0  (0x0)  (int)
   info.parent = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_104c_ac56'  (string)
   info.linux.driver = 'serial_cs'  (string)

but now when i try wvdialconf wvtest i get the following

laptop:~$ sudo wvdialconf wvtest
Password:
Editing `wvtest'.

Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

ttyS0<Info>: Device or resource busy
Modem Port Scan<*1>: S0   S1   S2   S3

Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?

Please read the FAQ at http://open.nit.ca/wiki/?WvDial

If you still have problems, send mail to <wvdial-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx>.

****
Am also attaching modemdata.txt - but this again does not show the
pcmcia card Modem. There is another winmodem possibly working with the
hfs conexant driver but that is a separate issue.

Any suggestions / help

would be appreciated.

thanks
