Done, Marv, as http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/rr-dialup-in-linux.html
but be aware that it contains further links such as www.belikoff.net itself (other things such as http://www.belikoff.net/drupal/linux) or http://dialaccess.rr.com/ etc...

Marvin,

If you run into anyone else trying to dial into Roadrunner KPPP
actually works out of the box, set up per:

http://www.belikoff.net/rr-dialup-in-linux

Just came across this and it worked fine. I'm running Ubuntu (Gnome)
and it's built in ppp dialer doesn't have as much configuration as
KPPP. Thanks for all the assistance, driver has been working without a
hitch. Don't understand what KPPP does different from wvdial, and I
still can't get that to connect completely. If I ever figure out the
difference I'll let you know.

Marvin,

Thanks! Well that's a lot closer. The modem dials out, sends user &
pw but doesn't connect to ISP. Output below. Odd thing, I have
configured the modem through the Ubuntu (gnome) gui and it doesn't
seem to access the modem. Does the linuxant hsfmodem not support the
gnome interface?

Is there a way to manually input user and pw to troubleshoot the login protocol?

Steve,

When you boot up again, run
$ sudo wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
which should report finding the modem
Then remove the ; and replace the <xxxx> blocks with your dialout info using:
$ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

Save and try a dialout with:
$ sudo wvdial

Marvin,
Thanks! I put in the linuxant and it seemed to install ok, but no
action from the modem. I won't have time until next Tuesday to really
look at it again. The modem is an occasional use item but nice to have
working (it is a laptop after all). I usually have to read this stuff
several times as I'm a complete Linux newbie, and with Windows only
looked under the hood if absolutely necessary. Have programmed in the
past so not totally lost on the command line. :)

Steve,

From Archival information, the 103c:0024 Subsytem has a Conexant soft
modem chip. If you follow the output instructions and run twice
$ ./scanModem
or
$ ./scanModem test 10b9:5457    103c:0024
all the cogent information will be ouput, including:
 From  http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-ubuntu-x86.php
 download hsfmodem_VersionSpec_k2.6.20_15_generic_ubuntu_i386.deb.zip

 Under Linux unpack with:
 $ unzip hsfmodem*.zip

Full speed service will require purchase of a software key.
Alternatively see
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/bigarch/archive-seventh/msg01830.html
and complete setup for compiling setup as necessary.

 Then install with:
 $ sudo dpkg -i hsfmodem*.deb
 Subsequently, the modem should be found with
 $ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
 Edit in your personal information with:
 $ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
 and try dialing out with:
 $ sudo wvdial.
 See Testing.txt  for details.
