Here goes :

$ sudo /usr/sbin/slmodemd -c FRANCE --debug=2 --log --alsa hw:0,6
SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Aug  6 2007 22:02:27
<813.072406> SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Aug  6 2007 22:02:27
<813.072504> hw:0,6: startup modem...
<813.072612> hw:0,6: update termios...
symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/3' created.
modem `hw:0,6' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/3'
<813.073329> open file: /var/lib/slmodem/data.hw:0,6...
<813.074096> main: rt applyed: SCHED_FIFO, pri 99
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.

Afterwards, wvdial dials normally. Notice that the hyphen you put just
before hw:0,6 :

was certainly a typing mistake and should not be there. The slmodemd
used is the one currently available at
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
