SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.9e-pre1  may be too old. You shouldbe using a 2.9.11.
>From http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/packages/smartlink/get the SLMODEMD-1.0.13.tar.gzUse the slmodemd therein to replace your old version at /usr/sbin/slmodemd
