# modprobe martian_dev
loading  followed by:
# martian_modem
should report creation of
  /dev/ttyySM0 --> /dev/pts/N some nimber

Use
# wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
to detact the modem and add a line
Carrier Check  = no
to  /etc/wvdial.conf

Please read the documentation. I'm traveling over the weekend.
