It won't load because it's already built into the kernel.

$ grep SND_HDA_INTEL /usr/src/linux-2.6.22-gentoo-r2/.config
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=y

Do I have to recompile the kernel with this as a module either
temporarily (for the script) or permanently (to get it to work)?
