The faulure of all the modem diagnostics, suggests that the

has a Conexant softmodem chip in the 144d:c036.
>From http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-suse-x86.php
download the 	hsfmodem-7.60.00.09full_k2.6.18.2_34_default-1suse.i586.rpm.zip

Under Linux open a console and:
$ unzip hsf*.zip
One way of starting the installation of the hsf*.rpm is to browse over
to it wit the Konqueror browser.

There are good diagnostics in the Linuxant package.
Please report back the outcome.
Should it instead be a modem requiring slmodemd, support is
problematic for reasons we can later relate.
