Ok, I've done that but however everything stays the same. Now I've also experimented using gksudo gnome-ppp and the terminal listed some more insightful (not for me anyway) information:

The first log I list bellow is the modem autodetect in gnome-ppp while using gksudo, the second log is the connection attempt while using gksudo gnome-ppp:

rodrigo@rodrigo-laptop:~$ gksudo gnome-ppp

Following your suggestion I've installed succesfully the linuxant
driver, however when I use Gnome-PPP the modem connects but does not
authenticate correctly, so the connection is cut off. Following is the
log, the first log is without sudo , so there are some messages about
PAP and CHAP, and the second log is with sudo (in Ubuntu there is no
root acess, that's ok with me, but I don't know if I need to access
Gnome-PPP (or wvdial, for that matter) with sudo).

I think we are almost getting there thanks to your help, by the way my
name is Rodrigo from Brazil, and I'm trying to connect through Yahoo!
free access.
Thanks again.
