We recommend using wvdialconf to setup the dialout.
$ sudo  wvdialconf    /etc/wvdial.conf
which should report finding the modem.

Edit in your personal info with
$ sudo gedit  /etc/wvdial.conf
replacing the <xxxx>  blocks and adding a line:
 Carrier Check  =  no.

Then try a dialout with:
$ sudo wvdial

If there is still a problem, send us the failure details,
including the terminal segment of /var/log/messages  reporting the attempt.
