Steve, Under your System
CPU=i686, Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS Linux version 2.6.15-28-386
This modem Class 0703: 1039:7013 Modem: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Modem Controller Primary PCI_id 1039:7013 Subsystem PCI_id 1028:0195 Softmodem codec or Vendor from diagnostics: from Archives: SIL27, an AgereSystems is in principle supported by a combination of the driver snd-intel8x0m driver on your System and the slmodemd in the SLMODEMD.gcc4.tar.gz at http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/packages/smartlink/ However your System has a configuration problem:
--- Bootup diagnositcs for card in PCI slot 0000:00:02.6 ---- [17179574.092000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:02.6[C] -> GSI 18 (level,
low) -> IRQ 185
[17179574.092000] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:02.6 disabled
-------------- for reasons obscure, the kernel has shutdown access to the modem card seated in PCI slot 0000:00:02.6 Do $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-modem On my System (there is output: # Uncomment these entries in order to blacklist unwanted modem drivers # blacklist snd-atiixp-modem # blacklist snd-intel8x0m # blacklist snd-via82xx-modem As long as your line # blacklist snd-intel8x0m has the leading # (meaning ignore this line) it is OK. Should it be: blacklist snd-intel8x0m Do an edit with: $ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-modem and insert the leading # Then reboot and rerun scanModem Also do: $ dmesg > dmesg.txt and send us the dmesg.txt Also read the Bootup.txt , its options may prove necessary. Lacking a dsp (digital signal processing) chip, the modem is a software intensive or "softmodem" type. Its primary controller manages the traffic with the CPU. But the software needed is specified in the Subsystem. ----------------------------------------- Support type needed or chipset: slmodemd An ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) modem driver: snd-intel8x0m provides Low Level support enabling contact with the modem hardware. For all BUT Conexant chip soft modems (using hsfmodem software) complementary High Level support is through a Smartlink utility: slmodemd Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.0.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack under Linux with: $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.0.tar.gz and read instructions therein.
