Mat,
Done some further checking.Evidently you have installed a package kernel-headers-2.4.27-2-386However the dependent package which it needs, kernel-headers-2.4.27-2,is strangely missing from its expected sitehttp://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?searchmode=filelist&word=kernel-headers-2.4.27-2&version=stable&arch=i386This is the package which would have provided the modversions.h neededfor the compilation.
There are packages kernel-headers-2.4.27-3-386 and kernel-headers-2.4.27-3complementary to kernel-image-2.4.27-3-386. I have checked that therequired modversions.h is therein provided. So if you can upgrade tothese packages, the ltmodem driver compile will work under a 2.4.27-3-386 bootup
These all can be searched out at: http://www.debian.org/distrib/packagesJust use the SEARCH box in turn for "kernel-image-2.4" and kernel-headers-2.4"
But as recommended earlier, you would be better off with a Linuxproviding 2.6 kernels. http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ is Debian based, but easier for beginners. If you can burn an Edgy CD for a subsequent install, that would be aneasy forward route. Just rerun scanModem at that point and it willinstruct appropriately.
Do email back if stuck. The currently problem is a failure at theDebian repository which I'll report. You might check in a couple daysif the kernel-headers-2.4.27-2becomes available, if you want to stay with your current kernel.
