RE: bash: SLMODEMD: command not found
You can either
$ sudo ./slmodemd -c UK --alsa hw:0,6

or copy slmodemd  to  /usr/sbin/slmodemd
putting it on the command PATH. Then there should be a success with:
$ sudo slmodemd -c UK --alsa hw:0,6

Hello,

I'm a brand new Linux user and have just installed Ubuntu version 6.10
on a laptop that contains an internal dialup modem.

The Scanmodem utility was straight forward) and I've downloaded &
unpacked (hopefully the right term?) the relevant smartlink complied
driver using the command:

$ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz

and in my 'terminal' session I can move to this directory, but I'm not
having any luck executing the file 'SLMODEMD'.

I've tried using the command:

$ sudo slmodemd -c UK --alsa hw:0,6

but only get the error message:

bash: SLMODEMD: command not found

I've read through the text files that were packaged with the driver and
also tested trying to create a country list (purely for a test, there's
already a usable country list bundled with the files) using command:

$ SLMODEMD --countrylist &>Clist.tx

but get the same error message.

I've a nasty feeling that I'm making a novice mistake somewhere and any
advice would be appreciated.

Best Wishes

  -------------------------------------------
  Lacking a dsp (digital signal processing) chip, the modem is a software
  intensive or "softmodem" type. Its primary controller manages the traffic
  with the CPU. But the software needed is specified in the Subsystem.
  -----------------------------------------
Support type needed or chipset: slmodemd

  An ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) modem driver: snd-hda-intel
  provides Low Level support enabling contact with the modem hardware.
  For all BUT Conexant chip soft modems (using hsfmodem software)
  complementary High Level support is through a Smartlink utility: slmodemd

  Download from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
  the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack
under Linux with:
        $ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
  and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with
command:
        sudo slmodemd -c YOUR_COUNTRY --alsa hw:0,6
  reporting dynamic creation of ports:
        /dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
  Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.

  Already loaded into the kernel is snd-hda-intel and audio drivers it
