For automation get the package from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/misc/sl-modem-daemon
and install with:
$ sudo -i sl*.deb
At http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz has a compiled slmodemd more
recent than that in the Ubuntu package.
Unpack under Linux with:
$ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz
and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
sudo slmodemd -c USA --alsa modem:1
reporting dynamic creation of ports:
/dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N , with N some number
Alternaively use the scripts by:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon start
The scripts will also do boot setup including the
sudo slmodemd -c USA --alsa modem:1
There have been cases of the HSF modem software interferring with
slmodemd function. But if you don't have the hcflinmodem software
installed, likely there will not be a problem.

speed download.
Under 2.4.n kernels install both the RIPTIDE and HCF or HSF drivers,

Under 2.6.n kernels, the hsfmodem package may provide modem support.

with the CPU. But the software needed is specified in the Subsystem.
