I'm a bit stuck. I've downloaded and unzipped SLMODED.gcc4.tar.gz and slmodem-2.9.11-
20070204.tar.gz but don't know what to do next. I'm completely new to linux and ubuntu.

sudo slmodemd -c YOUR_COUNTRY --alsa
reporting dynamic creation of ports:
/dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N , with N some number
Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow through guidance.
The diagnostic outputs for this softmodem section have their raw information in
folders and text files under /proc/asound/ which you can browse. The information
is from files:
