Syed,
Actually you need not pay if you do not need FAXing service and can live with a rate of 14.4kb/s. Although the specifications of these modems say "up" to 56k, the phone line quality usually only yields 1/2 of that maximum speed, and for 1/4 of the maximum 56k speed the driver is free, that is 1/2 of the average effective data transmission rate. So if you need the modem just to read limited amounts of mail while on travel, you need not pay 20$ for the fully featured driver. I am writing this because it is my case when I use my modem, just on travel, and where no ADSL is available, and using an IMAP mail server with the client (your box) set to automatically download mail headers only, not the contents, thus saving downloading of junk mail and non urgent issues.
Another way to make the right decision is to ask yourself how much time
you can use your ISP and pay the phone bill until you have spent 20$.
This helps keeping in proportion the certainly frustrating need to spend 20$ for the full driver.

Another modem I'm working on. I got a bad feeling that I'm going to have to
pay for drivers! I should stop messing around and get a proper external
serial modem instead of trying out all these winmodems. Well let me know what
happens.
