John, Any particular chipset can be incorporated into a variety of modem cards with various auxilliary features and diverse BrandNames/Models. I haven't dealt with a hardware modem in about 10 years, when my companies laptops starting using winmodems. For usage under Linux the brand names and models are really not important, except for perhaps the warranty. The 3CXM556 chipsets are from 3COM Inc, and the FM560LK from AgereSystems. You could buy the brandname modems, but make sure you get the Controller Chipset (hardware) type modem, as both companies also make WInModems. Marvin, I'd love it if you would identify a particular brand/model of modem that works best under Linux. I'm so frustrated with the 4 different modems I've tried. I'll gladly spend for a modem that will definitely work. Thank you for all your hard work! I really really appreciate it! Thanks! Cat, For fax service, you should not rely on a winmodem, but get one of the "hardware"/controller chipset modems, which are a bit more expensive than the winmodems. But their serial like drivers are in every Linux release. Search the Internet for 3CXM556 and/or FM560LK chipsets to find modem cards having them.
