Download from
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
the package SLMODEMD.gcc4.tar.gz having a compiled
slmodemd. Unpack
under
Linux with:
	$ tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.tar.gz
and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem
is setup with
command:
	sudo slmodemd -c YOUR_COUNTRY --alsa modem:1
reporting dynamic creation of ports:
	/dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N   , with N some number
Read Smartlink.txt and Modem/YourSystem.txt for follow
through
guidance.

Should compiling fail, then the following message (cut
+ paste from Marv) should help you set up your modem

Upon install, the new Ubuntu Edgy release does
install almost all
needed compiling constituents:

   make utility - /usr/bin/make
   GCC Compiler version 4.1.2
   kernel_headers are found through:
 /lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/build -->
   /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.17-10-generic
which further calls on:
   /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.17-10

However for most/all of the additional modem drivers
needed, two
additional packages must be installed:
  libc6-dev
  linux-libc-dev
which are not automatically installed.

 But they are on the install CD, which nicely
automounts with opening
of the Nautilus file browser. They are then located
at:
/media/cdrom0/pool/main/l/linux-source-2.6.17/linux-libc-dev_2.6.17-10.33_i386.deb
/media/cdrom0/pool/main/g/glibc/libc6-dev_2.4-1ubuntu12_i386.deb

The install can be done by mouse clicking on their
icons, which will
give the option of using the Gdebi package installer.

Compiling preparation should then be complete,
supporting subsequent
compiinging within the modem specific code packages.
Without these packages installed, there will be
several missing
FileNames.h erors.

This info is being sent, just to establish a URL for
inclusion in
scanModem.

Marv

Antonio
