because it makes the change itself less readable

There are plenty of craftsmen who want to look after their tools.

but more after their functionality than after their beauty

(but yeah, every analogy, ultimately, is a stretch; and there's value in the beauty of your work, for sure; but a messy source and a clean little diff can have beauty too---I tried to get that across somewhat in a talk I once gave, can't remember which LOCon or FOSDEM that was, though)
