In fact, they used to open with the prompt showing the directory it was in 
last time.

Nothing else is affected.

I haven't used anything like that, just log out of one session and log in 
again, expecting everything to be as I left it. That's how I set the startup 
options in System Settings, and it hasn't changed.

My impression, from watching the logout process, is that Konsole is not 
shutting itself down neatly, or at all, and eventually it just has the ground 
wrenched out from under it.

Just Konsole.

This started happening just after a plasma update. I've nothing fancy in X or 
Wayland. This is an ~amd64 Gentoo system (in which everything is built from 
source, as you know): kde-apps/konsole 21.08.2,  kde-plasma/plasma-meta 
5.23.1, kde-frameworks/frameworkintegration 5.87.0.

I update the system daily. I've even rebuilt the whole system from bare metal, 
for another reason, and it hasn't helped.
